Gunna found himself in a completely different position eighteen months before the release of his album “A Gift & a Curse.” The Georgia native’s year began on a high note with the success of “DRIP SEASON 4EVER” and its chart-topping track “pushin P” with Young Thug, which altered the lexicon of the rap game. However, in May of that year, both Gunna and his YSL label boss were indicted in a sweeping RICO case, causing turmoil and unrest in his personal and professional life. By December, he had been released, but rumors surrounding the terms of his release ensued. In response to the speculation and rumors, Gunna clapped back with the single “bread & butter.” Having been scarred and affected by the allegations and accusations, which can be damaging in both the rap game and on the streets, he unloads his lyrical prowess on his first album since his arrest.
Throughout “A Gift & a Curse,” Gunna addresses his situation head-on, offering a unique perspective on the circumstances. As a defiant superstar, he reintroduces himself to his fans and detractors on the simmering “back at it.” He then follows it up with the confident and confrontational “back to the moon.” He reflects on what has changed with “idk nomore,” while returning to the luxurious lifestyle of his pre-arrest days with “rodeo dr” and “p angels.” For the grand finale, “alright,” he clears the path for himself, showing a clearer direction and expressing hope as he shouts out YSL amidst an optimistic chorus.
