Bethany Cosentino has released her debut solo album titled Natural Disaster, which coincided with an extremely hot summer. On the title track, she acknowledges the scorching temperatures and uses it as a metaphor for facing an uncertain future. The album explores themes of love, motherhood, and her new solo career, as Cosentino announced an indefinite hiatus for her indie-pop duo, Best Coast.
The decision prompted introspection and soul-searching. Most of the songs on Natural Disaster were written during the pandemic, but Cosentino manages to balance the sense of impending doom with catchy melodies and sha la las. Fans of Best Coast are familiar with her ability to blend existential despair with the laid-back vibes of California. Despite her sun-baked reputation, she decided to record the album in Nashville with producer Butch Walker. The opening songs pay homage to Sheryl Crow, with vibrant ’90s-era guitar hooks and catchy choruses.
Cosentino reflects on her past self in songs like “Real Life” and concludes the album with the heartfelt “I’ve Got News for You,” a love letter to a potential life partner. Throughout the album, she emphasizes her journey of self-discovery and determination not to give up on it.
